The Last of Us Season 1 - Episode 5
The HBO and HBO Max series has been dominating the television landscape since its premiere last month, with each episode increasing its viewership over the one that came before it. This resulted in an early second-season renewal for the juggernaut, which has just gone from strength-to-strength since it made that monumental premiere.
It looked like HBO was willing to even put it up against the Super Bowl, which airs this Sunday night, but in a last-minute change to the schedule, The Last of Us episode 5 will now be made available to stream early on Friday, both via HBO Max and HBO on-demand.
The pair holding Ellie and Joel at gunpoint will be familiar to anyone who's played the PlayStation game that inspired the show, but fans might be surprised by how much the adaptation adds to their backstory. Time for SPOILERS as we dive into the dark episode 5.
The episode opens with a flashback showing how Kathleen's civilian militia force overthrew FEDRA 10 days before Joel and Ellie got into town -- the people rose up against this oppressive force and pretty much slaughtered its members in the streets. It's graphic and horrible, and 8-year-old Sam (Keivonn Woodard) witnesses some of this violence as his older brother Henry (Lamar Johnson) rushes him into hiding in an attic.
After the ending of the previous episode, video game players knew exactly what was in story for The Last Of Us Season 1 Episode 5. Newcomers to the series, who know nothing about the games, will go on a wild and emotional journey as the story of Henry and Sam, and their time with Joel and Ellie, plays out. This episode also gives viewers some incredible action, and more scenes that feel ripped right from the TLOU video game.
